Things You Need To Know!
  • Outings include day hikes, backpack overnight hikes, overnight car/tent camping trips, and trail maintenance.
  • All outings are open to members and guests, unless otherwise noted due to restrictions on size of group.
  • Please review outing description for difficulty rating (easy, moderate, extreme) and plan accordingly.
  • Remember trip coordinators are member volunteers who plan outings for your enjoyment.
  • To participate in day hikes, backpack overnight hikes, overnight camping trips, trail maintenance. YOU MUST notify the trip coordinator in advance that you will attend.
  • Should you not do this you may arrive to find the trip cancelled or changed to a different location.
  • Trip coordinator may also cancel an outing if nobody calls to participate.
  • Your participation is important once you agree to do an outing.
  • Please call the Trip coordinator should you need to cancel.
May 2008

03 - Trail Maintenance - Pinhoti

Our May maintenance outings are exciting times to see end of spring wild flowers; while helping to preserve the trails for others to enjoy. Our volunteers meet 8:00am, Hardee's, Exit 199, I-20 East (Heflin Exit); travel time is @ 1.5 hours. Come prepared with gloves, long pants, and long sleeve shirt; bring day pack with water, snacks, and lunch; expect to stay the all day and stop for dinner at a local restaurant on the way home. May 10/11 - Sipsey Wilderness Wildflowers (CANCELLED)

Over night backpack or day hike in and out on Saturday. Located in Bankhead National Forest, in Winston County near the town of Double Springs. Length & Difficulty: 2.7 miles, easy.  Elevation change: 150 ft. View high cliff, cave passages, and biodiversity. The Borden Creek trail (trail #200) http://www.montesano.com/hikeweb/sipsey.htm leads down one of the prettiet canyons of this unique natural area. At one point it actually leads through a cave to bypass a cliff along Borden Creek.

May 24/25/26 - Pinhoti Trail (CR55 to Chief Ladagia Trail)

The 2008 NTD slogan "Join us on the Trail". This will be a celebration for Hikers, Hiking Clubs and USFS of our 2007/08 trail activities and the opening on the new trailhead at Bull Gap. This is the current southern terminus of the Pinhoti National Recreational Trail at (AL 148) east of Sylacaga , Al. However, very soon this will be a  trailhead road crossing as the trail is extended south along the ridge of Rebecca Mountain.  Bring a covered dish and enjoy the picnic after a short work activitiy. 14 - Walls of Jericho http://www.nature.org/success/jericho.html
This will be overnight backpack and/or day hiking for those that would like to walk in and out. The hike is about 3.5 miles in length, one way, and is downhill most of the route into the gorge. That, of course, means the walk back will be mostly uphill. It is a strenuous hike, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and take plenty of water and snacks. The trail is well marked but often is muddy for days after a rain shower. Several streams have to be crossed, so plan on getting wet. There is a tent only campsite at the bottom. 27/28/29/30 - Mountain to Sea Trail (MST) (Re-Scheduled for Labor Day weekend)

This will be overnight backpacking from Balsam Gap to Black Balsam Knob on the Mountain to Sea trail in North Carolina.
