The ATCA was established in 1982 to bring together persons interested in hiking the AppalachianTrail (AT) and to conduct outings to encourage the development of outdoor skills and wholesome exercise; to foster in its members and in the general public an appreciation of the outdoors; to teach and encourage public observation of conservation ethics; to collect and publish information concerning regions of interest to hikers in Alabama; to encourage the preservation of wilderness areas; and to provide advice and assistance as may be requested by national and state governments in the preservation and conservation of our forest, streams, and natural resources located on or near trails.
APPALACHIAN NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL
The ATCA does not maintain any section of the Appalachian Trail (AT). However, it does support the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC). The AT is a 2,178 mile footpath that follows the ridges of the Appalachian Mountains. A park that stretches through 14 states, from Georgia's forested Springer Mountain to Maine's mighty Mt. Katahdin. Groups of private citizen-volunteeers made this vision a reality, as a hiking path by 1937. Along its route, the AT crosses eight national forests, six other units of the national park system, about 60 state parks and game lands, and valley communities.
Outings
The ATCA offers a wide variety of outings:
Overnight weekend or week long backpacking on the AT; requiring strength and endurance, but you will see the forest, mountains and streams of the Eastern United States as few people ever do. Beautiful sunsets, sunrises and vistas from cliffs and balds. Camping from you backpack, sleeping in a trail shelter, tent, or under the stars. Visit our Photo Gallery.
Day hikes through spring flowers in the Talladega National Forest and many other local state parks and national forest. Walks to explore waterfalls, cascades and fall colors. Come enjoy the outdoors and beautiful natural resources. See Outing Schedule for information.
Meetings
The ATCA normally meets on the first Sunday of each month at 2:00pm in a 2nd floor meeting room of the Vestavia Hills Library at 1112 Montgomery Hwy(Hwy 31) - (except holidays weekends, in which case the meeting is normally scheduled on the following Sunday)

Trail Maintenance
The ATCA officially maintains 54.9 miles of the Pinhoti National Recreational Trail as part of the US Forest Service 'Adopt-A-Trail' program. Work consists of removing annual growth and storm damage, reconditioning trail tread, and assisting in other projects coordinated with the USFS and other local hiking clubs and organizations.
